Blizzard's Nick Carpenter explains.
With 1.9 million polygons and 688 individual pieces, creating the character model for StarCraft II's Tichus Findlay in StarCraft II's debut cinematic was no easy task. Blizzard's cinematic creative director Nick Carpenter was at GDC 2008 to explain how intensive the creation process really was. "We made the tech guys' lives a nightmare," he said.
The concept for the trailer centered on the idea of getting in and seeing what actually goes on in one of StarCraft's Terran barracks structures, which are used to produce marine units. When the trailer was first shown at Blizzard's Worldwide Invitational in Seoul, South Korea last year, he said people kept asking him why Tichus, the cinematic's star and major character in SCII, was getting welded into the suit. "The idea is, he's not coming back."
For visual inspiration while designing Tichus' armor and the room surrounding him, Carpenter and his team of artists visited and photographed an industrial plant. By examining the way light filtered through metal shafts and reflected against chipped coats of paint and other metallic structures, the team was better able to implement the theme of a "used future" into Tichus' armor and the construction machine seen in video. "Every object tells a story," Carpenter said he would frequently remind his team.
Zeratul's design was based more around Bruce Lee. Carpenter wanted him to appear "ninjaesque," and he was outfitted with Egyptian-styled armor to give him a more exotic appearance. Carpenter added, "The thing about Zeratul is that he doesn't have a mouth, so we need to give him really expressive eyes."
In addition to showing off loads of character art and early 3D modeling and animation for the finished cinematic, Carpenter went briefly into how Zeratul, Kerrigan, and a hydralisk were created. For Kerrigan, Carpenter wanted her to appear, "a little bit more creepy, a little bit more Zergy." He also revealed her bone wings were designed with the idea that she could spread them out underneath her and use them like spider legs.
Yet even with all the work and planning put into every step of the creation process, not everything would make it through to final. "We spent all this time making [Kerrigan] a nice pretty spine," said Carpenter, "and we wound up covering it with all her hair."
