Recently Paris was host to the Yearly World Wide Invitational, the yearly press-event organised by Gamesdeveloper Blizzard. During the WWI Starcraft II was playable and it became clear what was changed since the introduction last year (also at the WWI). Particularly the different units from all three races have been worked on. Blizzard couldn’t have picked a better place to announce Starcraft II than Seoul, where the first WWI originally took place.
最近巴黎举行了年度WWI,由暴雪的游戏开发者组织的年度游戏盛会。在WWI中,可以玩到星际2,也首次清楚了解了自上次的介绍以来(也是WWI)的改变。尤其是三个种族不同的单位的功能。第一次WWI举办地的首尔,暴雪也不可能找到比她更好的地方来公布星际2了。
Starcraft is still very popular in Southern Korea. But just like with the Introduction of Diablo III this year, the presentation of Starcraft II was limited to the showing of some trailers and in-game footage. Starcraft II was not yet playable then. Fortunately this year that was different. At the WWI 2008 there were dozens op Computers on which the game could be played. Long lines of fans waited patiently for their 20 minutes of playtime. Blizzard’s team was available to shed light on the modifications and changes made since last year.
星际在韩国依然很流行。但是就像今年介绍暗黑3时一样,星际2的展出依然受到游戏视频的长度限制。在那时,玩家还不能玩到星际2。幸运的是,今年不同了。在WWI2008上,有大量的电脑可以来玩这款游戏。排着长队的粉丝耐心的等待着这20分钟的游戏时间。暴雪的团队也介绍了自去年来的改变与修正。

Twenty minutes is not very long, but fortunately Starcraft II, just as it’s great prequel, plays really fast. A game against one computer controlled opponent (more was not possible for regular visitors) could be finished just within those twenty minutes. As a member of the press I was given the opportunity to play multiple games, with very different results.

During my sessions it became very clear that a lot of work needs to be done balancing the game. There is still time for that. Officially Starcraft II will be released when it is done, but during the demonstration in Paris it became clear that it won’t be this year. Rob Pardo, Lead game design, admitted the game was long from finished. The singleplayer Campaign is only one-third finished and there is till a lot of work being done balancing the different units, that do yet possess all possibilities.
在记者会期间我们就知道还有许多平衡工作要做,也要花很多时间去做。官方说星际2将会在做好时发售,但是从巴黎的展示来看,很明显今年不会了。Rob Pardo,游戏主设计师,承认要完成游戏还有很长时间。单人战役只完成了三分之一,并且在平衡不同的单位上还有很多事情要去做,依然会有很多不同的可能性。
In the current version is not possible to adequately battle the cheap and fast produce-able Terran marines. The Terrans can put up an army in such short time, that is it hardly possible for the other races to put up adequate defences. During this phase of development is doesn’t really matter though. I think it is quite something that Blizzard allows us to play the game in this stage. Not many developers would allow that in such an early stadium.
当前版本里很难对付战场上便宜并且生产迅速的机枪兵。Terran可以迅速组建一支军队,而这对于其他种族组建足够的防御来说是很难的。当然在目前的游戏进展来看,这还没什么。我认为这只是暴雪允许我们在这个场地所玩的游戏版本。也不会有很多开发商在如此早期允许玩家试玩。

At first sight Stacraft II is nothing more than a polished up version of the original. The Terran, Protoss and Zerg are still the races and their graphic style has hardly changed. The Terran are still physically tough, the protoss are still lightfooted and posses superior technical knowledge and the Zerg are still a bizare alien lifeform, that seems to have escaped from an alien-movie. The first look and feel of the game is also much of the same. There are tons of blue crystals, minerals that will be most important raw material to build up your army. Around these crystals there are a usually a couple of geysers, from which you can harvest Vespene Gas. This is the second raw material which will allow you to build the more advanced units.
第一眼看到星际2,以为只是一个传统星际的增强版而已。Terran、Protoss还有Zerg依然是那些种族,而他们所独有的形象也很难改变。Terran依然拥有强大火力,Protoss仍旧是身形敏捷并且有着极高的科技,而Zerg还是那种独特的生命体,这看上去就像取材于一部科幻电影。第一眼和第一感觉都是和原作如此相似。有着成吨的蓝色水晶,矿石依然是建造部队的重要原料。在这些矿石周围还会有2个气矿,你可以在其中采集气体。这是你的第二种原料,可以用来造更先进的单位。
The setup of the game has not changed either. The workers of each race, the basic unit are being sent out to collect the minerals and they can also harvest the Vespene geysers as soon as you place a special building on one. Up until now there is nothing new to be noticed, the game works and looks exactly the same as the original that was released 10 years ago. It just looks like Blizzard scaled the old game up to new resolution. Even the terrain looks the same, no fancy 3d graphics. So if it is not the graphic style that was changed , let’s take a look at gameplay.
游戏的架构也没变。每个种族的工人,都是采集矿石的基本单位,当然在你气矿上建造一个特殊建筑以后就可以采集气体。目前为止没有什么新的东西值得注意,游戏进程也和10年前的1代差不多。看上去好像是暴雪把一个旧游戏改成了新的画面而已。地形看上去很像,并不是的很出色的3D图像。所以如果画面风格没有改变,那么看上去就和现在的游戏视频一样。

Pardo told us during a lecture what the most important base elements of the new game would be. Blizzard sees the three really different races as the most important aspect of the game. They want to enlarge the differences between the races in part two. Next to that, Blizzard wants the game to be easy accessible, but it should also be a challenge for the more experienced gamer.
Pardo在讲座上告诉我们了新游戏最重要的基本元素。暴雪将3个迥异的种族看作是游戏最重要的方面。他们需要增大种族间的差别。其次,暴雪要让这个游戏变得容易上手,但是要成为游戏经验丰富的玩家,依然会是一个挑战。
The most important thing to accomplish just that are the new possibilities of each unit. Every unit has it’s basic use, but next to that it will receive an advanced feature that will allow an experienced gamer to make the difference. According to Pardo The Zerg are given the most attention from the developers at this moment. The WWI was the first opportunity to show this race to the public, but Blizzard is till changing the race on a daily basis. What we saw in Paris was there-for not the final build of this race.
有待于完成的最重要的事情就是每个单位的新的技能。每个单位都有着它基本的用途,但是还要让高级玩家手里的它们变得不同,会得到能力的提升。根据Pardo的话,当前开发者的中心就是Zerg。而WWI是Zerg的第一次面向公众的演示,但是暴雪依然在不断修改这个种族。我们在巴黎的所见的不是这个种族的完成品。
The Zerg:
When playing the Zerg it immediately becomes clear what Pardo meant by changing the different races. The most important new feature is the ground of their bases. It is covered in Creep, a weird purple substance that automatically stretches out when the Zerg plant another structure. The role of this Creep has been greatly adjusted in the Starcraft II. If the Zerg-Player can get Creep under Hostile building, the substance will slowly start to damage the building. If the enemy player removes the Creep from under an Zerg building, by placing a building from himself next to it, that building will take damage. The use of Creep has thus changed into an attack mechanism.
玩Zerg时,我们就清楚的了解到这就是Pardo所说的种族间的差异性。最重要的新东西就是他们建筑的地面。地面被菌毯覆盖,一种奇怪的紫色东西,可以在Zerg建造另一个建筑时自动扩张。菌毯的角色在星际2中大大改变。如果Zerg玩家的菌毯在地方建筑下面,这些东西就会慢慢的开始伤害那个建筑。如果敌方玩家放置了自己的建筑以将在Zerg建筑下将菌毯去除,那么那个建筑也将会受到伤害。菌毯的作用看来变成了一个攻击武器。

It gets even better. The Overlord from the original game returns, but gets another role. This slow flying unit Can emit Creep and cover any chosen terrain with the purple substance. Even enemy bases can be covered with Creep. The great advantage of Creep really becomes clear when you have developed the Nydus Worm. The worm it’s self is not really special, but his possibility the dig underground tunnels is. Huge quantities of Zerg units can be transported through these tunnels really quick and the worm can make an exit in any piece of Creep. The troops in the tunnel can be directed to any exit and surface there. That way you can direct your troops to the center of the enemy base. Enemy troops can destroy the entrance/exit of the tunnel, but not the tunnel it’s self nor the troops in the tunnel. As long as the tunnelsystem has an exit. The troops are safe. It is a very safe way of trooptransport, but it has a downside. The Nydus worm is an expensive unit to build.
它变得更好了。领主来自于1代,但是却有着另一个角色。这个缓慢飞行,可以铺设菌毯并且将会用这种紫色物体覆盖任何地形。甚至是敌人基地也可以被菌毯覆盖。菌毯带来的优势很明显就是帮你建造了蠕虫通道。蠕虫本身没什么特别的,但是它的功能就是挖出地下隧道。大量的Zerg单位将可以通过地道被快速运送,而蠕虫本身可以从菌毯的任何地方建造出口。地道内的部队可以从任何出口逃出。这样你就可以引领你的部队进入敌军基地中心。对方部队可以摧毁地道的进出口,但是不能摧毁部队所在的地道本身。只要地道系统还有一个出口,部队就是安全的。这是一个非常安全稳妥的运输方式,但是也有缺点,就是蠕虫通道非常昂贵。

The deployment of the Overlord to disperse Creep also lead to the Zerg building up new bases very quickly. The Zerg have Spore Crawlers at their disposal, an excellent units that can only move on Creep and is very capable of taking out land and air-units. With a handful of Spore Crawlers a new base can be very well defended. Another not new, but greatly changed unit is the Zerg Queen., the small flying unit from part one has now become a big and most of all powerful defensive unit that defends the Zerg base The Queen is such a strong unit that you can only have one. The most important feature of the Queen is that through Transfusion she can heal surrounding units and buildings.

With the Queen around Buildings and units will last a lot longer in battle. The Queen has her own way of transport. Through deep tunnelling she can pop up in any Zerg Building, she is not dependant on the Nydus worm tunnels. This way she can move from base to base really quickly. But there is more. With Swarm Infestation, the Queen can provide every building in the base with offensive possibilities. And last but not least she can turn the Larva in a Zerg base into Mutant Larva. Except for some time, this last thing doesn’t cost anything. The mutated larva are not very strong, but she can summon a whole lot of them.
Another interesting Zerg Unit is the Corruptor. This flying unit is pretty weak and has low firepower, but he can make a flying enemy unit cross over to your side. That way he can neutralize de enemy air-force. An also new and interesting unit is the Zerg-Banneling. This also a very weak unit, it can only perform kamikaze actions. It can do that in two ways, they can dig in and wait for enemy units to pass over them and explode. Or they can attack an enemy unit in the back, they do this rolling.

The Protoss:
The protoss do also need a bit of extra attention from Blizzard. This race has been least developed of the three. It does become clear though that Blizzards also wants to enhance the features of the protoss so a lot of attention has been given to the powerfull Psionic powers of this race. In short, the protoss are technically superior to both other races. The Protoss units are there-for a lot more powerfull than the Zerg and Terran units, but the downside is that you can not build as many units and they take more time to build as well. Playing the Zerg requires a lot more planning than playing the other two races. Most Protoss units also have an extra attacking or defensive option.. This begins with the Zealots, their basic combat unit. The Zealots can now use Charge, an extra fast attack that looks like the attack of The Warrior in World of Warcraft. Charge is especially useful to attack enemies that fire at you from a distance, like the Terran marines. With the Nullifier Blizzard wanted to introduce a unit that is available early and can still make use of psionics. The Nullifier can raise up a forcefield that enemy units can not penetrate. Enemy units can be stopped or being forced to move into another direction.

The Stalker:

The Nullifier makes an excellent combo with the Stalker, a ground-unit that fires a machinegun like attack at it’s opponents. The Stalker’s attack can penetrate the Nullifier barrier. But the stalker can do more. It has learned blink from the mages in World of Warcraft. And can there-for instantly jump up down or to the side, so it can move over the terraces in the blink of an eye. Later in the game, the Protoss player can build the new Immortal. This unit has a special Protoss shield that will only be activated if the it gets to endure a heavy attack. With this feature it is an excellent unit to attack the heavy artillery of your opponent. It’s weakness is that the shield will only be activated by heavy attacks, so mass Marines and Zergling units can do a lot of damage to this unit. One of the first Flying units the Protoss will develop is the light Phoenix. The Phoenix have bene given the extra feature of temporary overload mode. In this mode they will shoot at all enemy units nearby. They can only do this for a couple of seconds and to restore after this. During the restore period it can do nothing, not even flying and is then really vulnerable.

A lot heavier is the flying lasercannon, the Warp ray. The warp ray beam get more powerful when it is aimed at the same target for a longer period. You use the Warp ray to attack the biggest enemy targets and to take heavily armoured building. But the Warp Ray also has a weakness. It can only focus it’s beam on one opponent, so is susceptible to attacks from large groups of relative weak units. Even a group of Terran marines can take down the Warp ray easily and the Zerg have the Corruptor to take it out. One of the stranger Protoss units is the Phase Prism. This is a new flying unit that can raise a protective forcefield anywhere it likes. This is especially useful in combination with Warp In, a technique the Protoss can learn. Using this the Protoss can teleport to any place on the map where there is a forcefield. This can be around the Pylons in their base, or to the mobile forecfield the Phase Prism creates.

The most impressive unit is most probably the Colossus. This tank on long legs Sticks out on the battlefield and is equipped with a powerful lasercannon. The cannon is not all that impressive but it moves up and down the battlefield, making it the most effective tool to take out groups of groundforces, like the Zergling. It can move real fast on it’s long legs and it can easily take any obstacle. Because of it’s height it can not easily be beaten by groundtroops but he has a hard time dealing with flying units.
The Mothership is the Protoss counterpart of the Zerg Queen. Just like the Zerg Queen, the Mothership is not the super-unit that will the battle for you, this was the case in the previous versions of Starcraft, but Blizzard has adjusted the Mothership for Starcraft II. It now has become a supportive unit that can teleport units on the map and put them under her on the battlefield. She can also make us the Time Bomb, which is a big forcefield that deflects all incoming projectiles and gives the Mothership the time to recover or move troops on the battlefield to safety. The Mothership is also a unit of which you only posses one at a time.
最令人印象深刻的可能就是巨像了。这种坦克用长腿站立在战场,并装备了强度大的能量武器。武器不是唯一令人印象深刻的东西,更值得注意的就是它在战场上跨越地形的能力,使它成为了消灭大量小型单位的利器,比如Zergling。它的移动速度也挺快,可以轻易跨越悬崖。因为它的高度,所以它不容被地面部队打死,但是在对付空军是就很难过了。

The Terran:
Next to the standard marine, the Terran also produce an improved version of the marine, called the reaper. Reapers are also lightly armed, but they have a jump-pack on their back, which allows to move quickly and negate Differences in height. They jump from terrace to terrace and are the ideal units to setup a quick surprise-attack or pursue enemy units. The Terran also have the Jackal. This is an extremely fast groundunit, which is equipped with a big flamethrower that can also damage your own troops. The Jackal can dish out major damage, but is only lightly armoured, so you should really make use of it’s speed. The Terrans still have the Siege Tank, which can fire heavy mortars and is especially effective from higher grounds. The Terran Airforce consists of the heavy BattleCruiser, that can not be taken down easily due to it’s heavy armor.

The most impressive Terran unit at this moment is undoubtedly the Thor. This is an enormous groundunit that moves real slow but has multiple heavy weapons at his disposal. Next to the standard guns it has weapons on it’s back with which it can take out flying enemies. Furthermore the Thor can repair it’s self and even if you can take the Thor out it ain’t over yet. From the remains of the Thor a new Thor can be built without you having to go back to one of your factories. The Thor is not as powerful as the Zerg Queen or the Mothership. The Terran have no equivalent to that, but with the Thor at their disposal that is not necessary, because you can build multiple Thors. By doing so you can send large quantities of metal and firepower at your opponents. The Terran are therefore not dependant on special units, underground tunnels or forcefields and although Blizzard has not yet captured the definitive form of the Terran race it is already clear that this race will rely on brute force and massive firepower. Rather than complicated strategies or tactics.
目前,最令人印象深刻的Terran单位毫无疑问就是雷神。这是一个巨大的地面单位,移动速度缓慢,但是装配了很多重型火炮。除了标准的火炮,它背上还有对空武器。此外,雷神还有自我修复的技能,甚至是如果你杀死了雷神,而实际上它还没有彻底被结果。雷神可以从雷神的残骸上恢复过来而不需要重新回到你的重工厂建造一个。雷神比不像Zerg的女王或者是母舰一样强大。Terran也没有与这两者相等的东西,但是利用雷神的威力,那些单位也并没有必要,因为你可以建造大量的雷神。这样做,你可以向对手倾泻大量的装甲与火力。Terran也因此不需要依赖于特殊单位,地下隧道或者是立场。虽然暴雪还没有完全弄好Terran这个种族,但是很明显这个种族将会是依赖于无情而又强有力的火炮,不是复杂的策略或者技术。

Pardo also told us that he wants prevent Starcraft from going into the Warcraft III direction. Units will get extra features, but not as many as the huge number of functions the Warcraft III units have. Every unit will have a primary and an advanced function. Both might be able to be upgraded by learning new techniques, but that will be it. The Singleplayer campaign was not shown in Paris and Pardo didn’t want to elaborate on that subject. He told us that the story would have a clear start and clear end and in between many sidetracks could be followed. He compared the structure to kinda flat form of American Football.
Pardo告诉我们他要防止星际争霸变成魔兽争霸III。单位可以得到额外的功能,但是不会像魔兽3的那些单位一样。每一个单位都有一个主要功能和高级功能。两者都可以通过科技升级来得到提升,但是依然有待改变。单人战役还没有在巴黎展示,而Pardo亦不想在这方面详细说明。他告诉我们说那个故事将会有一个明确的开始和清楚的结尾,而且在这之中也会有很多分支任务。他将任务的构成比做了美式足球式的直截了当。【嘎~这句不会】

Although not close to being finished Starcraft II turned to be a very playable game already.
Blizzard already seems to have the engine in order. The graphics of the game are old fashioned, but this has been done on purpose. They want Starcraft II to look the original Starcraft. If you pay good attention it has changed quite a bit. For instance: gravity has become a factor. You cannot notice that directly, but when you shoot down a flying unit and it’s pieces drop down a slope, the pieces will roll down naturally. Do not let the antique looks fool you. Underneath really is a game that is rally different from it’s prequel. Blizzard has really tried to improve the characteristic elements from the original game and bring them back in Starcraft II..
Starcraft II will be an RTS at topspeed but will still have many different tactical options without units having loads of complex options.
虽然星际2还远没有完成,但是已经显现出可玩性很高的样子。
暴雪已经看上去已经进入正轨了。游戏图像依然是老式的,但是已经在朝目标方向努力。他们要让星际2看上去符合星际的传统。但如果你用心去看的话,会发现已经改变了许多,譬如说:重力已经变成了游戏中确实存在的要素。你可能不是容易地注意到,但是如果你攻击一个飞行单位,然后它的碎片掉落下来,这些碎片会自然滚动。别让传统的外表骗了你。游戏的内部已经与前作有很多的改变了。暴雪尝试增强1代里的经典元素并将它们带入星际2.
星际2将会变成RTS上的顶峰,但是希望依然要有许多不同的战术特色而不只是单位本身的复杂属性。
